November 2021 Newsletter

Welcome to November!

Well last month I was talking about holding onto the last of summer, and now autumn is in full swing indeed. I took a week off at the end of October (family trip moved so many times and finally able to go) and whilst we left home with just a hint of autumn all around, boy did it hit with force by the time we were back! Now I appreciate you need to change timezone to be in France, I didn’t think you changed month as well! But isn’t it beautiful? Such inspiration as well. I think I need to get some Autumnal leaves happening in the studio ASAP!

What's been happening in the studio?

So I thought September was busy. Clearly it was just the warm up for October. 3 weeks of the most hectic schedule, but so much to show for it. The Tyndale Arts weekend was a huge success, lots of lovely visitors to the Methodist church where I was exhibiting with 5 other lovely artists.
As a side note, by profession I am a geography teacher, and have served time at the chalk face (although I’m more of a whiteboard generation). It took a long time for me to be able to stand up and say that I am an artist, but I do feel I am there now, and exhibiting with fellow artists is truly wonderful. A community that supports and encourages.

Anyway, back to my rambling, the art show weekend was lovely, although rain did make it interesting as I spent the Saturday juggling between the art show venue and the craft market venue, thankfully just across the road from each other!
I safely delivered 4 leaded panels of my red rose suncatcher design. (I really need to sack my designer, she is a devil for adding detail to make an easy design so tricky) alongside 2 geometric panels to be fitted into a beautiful carved wooden door. I will admit to holding my breath as they were fitted in, but they went like a dream! Phew. The other front door panel I was creating went together far more smoothly, a recreation of a previous panel that had been removed in the house that had commissioned me, but the new owners rightfully wanted replaced. Lovely to work with indeed.
Looking ahead, I have several commissions on the list for this month, alongside lots of Christmas decorations to get out to all my lovely customers. I will also be checking to see who has purchased ten of the suncatcher of the month designs to gift them a free special Christmas design that has not yet been released! I am very excited to get that underway this month indeed.

If you haven’t quite hit the 10 mark, this month I am marking rememberance with my Poppy design, and also next month will see a suitably themed creation available that still gives you time to get your quota in. Of course you can also go back through the monthly designs and purchase them now to reach your 10!

Working with glass top tip

My tip this month is based around one I see frequently both in the studio and asked on social media. How to hang small suncatchers.
When you add a ring to take the weight of your project. It is important to remember that the strength in any one point is only as good as the glue on the copper foil tape. Focus too much weight in one spot, and in time the foil will pull away.

Simple to fix, instead of a metal ring, make a metal ring with tails. Solder the tails into the seem of your suncatcher, preferably on a line going into the middle of the design, and the weight is distributed to create a far stronger support.
