September 2021 Newsletter

Welcome to September!

Hello and welcome to the September edition of our monthly newsletter. Summer has been a blink and you miss it kind of affair this last month hasn’t it. Hopefully you have been able to enjoy the nice days when they have surprised us, and the sudden downpours, wind and all else hasn’t caused too many problems. The studio has remained busy throughout August, and looking forward into September it shows no signs of lessening. Intermingled with that is the dreaded C word on the horizon – Christmas! When you are making handmade items, it is vital to plan ahead, and although it’s still 3 and a half months away, plans are afoot!

What's been happening?

The month began with a hugely successful visit to the Dursley Craft Market, with a brand new look to the stall, I almost didn’t recognise it myself. If you are local, please do pop along this weekend, it runs the first Saturday of every month and featured some wonderful creations to suit all!
The second of three planned showstopper pieces (as Paul Hollywood would refer to them) has now been finished, although she is still awaiting her frame and LED lighting to really show her off. Her partner in crime is now underway, all to be unveiled next month. On that note, looking towards the end of the month, Poppy Glass Studio will be part of the Tyndale Arts Week once more. As part of this, on Monday 27th September, I will be giving a talk and demonstration at Leaf and Ground, Dursley. Details are available here https://www.tyndalearts.co.uk

Away from the Arts Week, the other very exciting news for August was a visit to Creative Glass Guild in Bristol. For those of you who work with glass yourself, I am sure you will be aware of this incredible store. They provide the vast bulk of the materials used in the studio, and are finally, after a long long time once more open to visitors. A store visit, is a bit like a child in a sweet shop, or that 90s tv programme Supermarket sweep. £300+ inside 20 minutes impressed even me. Cant wait to see the creations that come from it.

Finally, jewellery. Yes I know, the studio makes stained glass. But what better than getting to wear that glass as well? The idea of jewellery isn’t a new one for the studio, but working with silver, that is! Verdict? It’s harder than it looks, and whilst I would like to take credit for the lovely sea glass ring I am wearing whilst I write this? I know how NOT to make it. However I am determined to keep learning and will hopefully be able to offer a workshop in the near future, when I have mastered all the ways NOT to do it!

From the studio

I’m sharing with you as always the brand new suncatcher of the month, with the start of the new school year, what better than books?

I am also sharing with you these pretty irridised angel wings, perhaps a way of remembering a loved one.

Finally, because the art show is rapidly approaching, one of my bigger pieces, also using that lovely irridised glass, stunning stonehenge panel. This is a one-of-a-kind piece.

Working with glass top tip

This is an old tip, but such a good one I need to share it with everyone who is new to working with glass. Those who come to the studio, or who have in the past will know that we mark lines for cutting using a sharpie pen. Great because they write on glass, then when it’s time to clean up they wash right off! Not so great when the glass goes to the grinder and they wash right off! So grab yourself a lipsalve/chapstick, and (make sure you don’t use the one you put on your lips) run it over the pen line. Let it dry and then the sharpie stays put whilst using the grinder!
