August 2022 Newsletter

Welcome to August!

I am sat here writing this having just witnessed history with the formidable lionesses winning the Euros for the first time, and bringing the trophy home before the men’s team. How incredibly inspiring. Women can achieve so much, and a message I was quick to share with my daughters. Not to let anyone put you down with the insult that you are just a girl. Indeed I feel I try to share this with my children daily. If mummy can create a business on her own (with Mr Poppy Glass cheering on) then nothing should stop them!

Amazingly I am actually getting a newsletter sent out on time, and having got LAST months newsletter on time too. Something of a record. So what are we waiting for ?

What's been happening in the studio?

July was a very busy month indeed. Alongside the regular weekday workshops, an additional 7 one day workshops were held, as well as 2 craft markets and several commissions, some of which are being kept top secret at the request of my customers.

I have seen a record number of finished projects from all the lovely studio regulars, which I have been, and will continue to share on the daily social media feeds, please do check them all out. To give you a little taste some are in the collage here.

What else? my eldest daughter dipped her toes into the fun and excitement of stained glass creation, with her very own sailing boat project. All cut out on her own and aside from the foiling which she struggled with, all completed independently.

I have been working on my central piece for my upcoming art exhibition, this that regularly visit the studio will know this is rather large, and loosely based on my two daughters. I won’t reveal much more here, but I’m working with ridiculously narrow lead and copper foil in a mix that is certainly causing the odd headache.

Finally I’m sharing one design, 3 variations. What started as the suncatcher of the month design morphed into a free standing variation on a lovely wooden base, and finally into a pair of swans, the symbol of unending love. All three options shown here.

Looking forward

August is meant to be a quieter month, with summer holidays to contend with, and my own projects to break the back of (dangerous term in the stained glass world). I have a few workshops in place, and lots already being booked in for September and beyond.

I am also looking towards the dreaded festive period, and will be once more holding Christmas workshops. There will be the option of workshops at pre Covid occupancy levels (max 4) as well as those limited to just 2 students if your personal bubble has grown somewhat, or you just want a quieter session.

The class will be to create your very own Moravian star in a fully supported class for beginners. £40 for your space, which includes all materials, tuition, a cup of tea or coffee and a slice of scrumpy cake. The sessions will last 3 hours and be predominantly on weekends, although I may add in a couple of evening workshops if there is the demand for them. If you would like to book a date in October or November for these workshops please don’t delay to drop me a message. If you can fill a workshop with friends or family you can all benefit from a 10% discount.

Working with glass top tip

Silicone cake icing moulds. Yep you heard me right. They are incredible. They don’t melt when you put really hot stuff in them. I’m talking super hot molten metal hot. I have used one rope pattern mould for some time now. I save up all my scraps of solder and when I have a jar full I tip them into the
silicone and use the soldering iron to re melt them back into a useable length of solder. Perfect to save burning finger tips and prevent wastage.

I have also more recently heard of these silicone patterns being used to create
detail on finished projects. Bodies for butterflies and such. Next on my list to
try out for sure!

Have fun!!
