June 2022 Newsletter

Welcome to Summer!

Oh dear, I managed to do it again. We’ve gone from a March newsletter, whilst April and May clearly didn’t happen. But I am back to it, so let’s not waste any more time, welcome to June!

What's been happening in the studio?

Much of the last couple of months was spent on the panel shown below. It measures just 19cm tall, but a scary 154cm wide!

The Duck House’s owners felt they needed a window to reflect the wonderfully unique name of their home, along with their own family. My brief was quite simply 4 ducks, possibly mallards. So that’s what I went with.
For those with a bit of understanding of how to structure designs, the reeds were placed to allow for certain cuts to be possible, and add to the strength of the design whilst keeping the glass pieces a more manageable size. I broke up the water with ripples to add more movement, and added paint to provide detail on beak tips, eyes and the texture on the female duck. My lovely clients were over the moon with the end result, so I simply had to share it here as well.
I will add, that trying to take a photo of a panel this size, inside and away from natural light isn’t at all easy, so take a look at several instead!
Now whilst the duck panel has easily been the biggest creation of late, it certainly has not been the only one. A slightly smaller one for you now, for a big fan of all things Scottish, but also more particularly of highland cows. This little fellow was a joy to create, using a range of semi transparent glass and my light box, the project came together very quickly, with nice simple shapes to foil, and wrapped in hobbycame to give added strength.

Away from this we do still have the very popular suncatcher scheme. Now halfway through 2022, it’s still shiny and new and even better for you!
A quick reminder of the rules:

🎉On the first of every month, a brand new suncatcher will be showcased.

🎉 purchase just 8 suncatchers as part of the scheme and you are entered to receive a free Christmas design worth £20, plus for every purchase your name is entered into a draw to win a gift voucher of £30. Purchase 10 suncatchers and your name is entered 10 times. Live draw will take place on Christmas Eve.

🎉The first 10 of each design will be available to purchase right away from the shop at a special introductory price of £15.00 After that the design goes into the catalogue. It can still be purchased but won’t be that cheap again.

So far we have had:
January - toadstool
February - unicorn
March - fox cub
April - Easter eggs
May - jubilee crown

Looking forward

Oh I have some exciting things planned for the studio, Mr Poppy Glass has been instructed, and I can’t wait to share them with you. The regulars who attend weekly classes don’t even know about this one! But all will be revealed soon.

Alongside this, there are a number of craft fairs coming up, before the studio takes a break in August. Take a peak at the dates for the diary below for details.

Weekly workshops, who would be interested in a new session to be added? I have had requests for a Monday session, so if this appeals to you, please drop me a message and I’ll look to see if we can fit you in. I’m going to be offering a 9.30am-11.30am class, and if there is enough interest I will add a 12.30-2.30 one as well.

Outside of the weekly classes I offer space on a Friday that can be booked as and when you want, and have availability on the following dates in June:
17th, 24th.

Alternatively book a weekend workshop and bring a friend for a few hours or even a whole day getting creative and having lots of fun too!

Dates for the diary

  • July 2nd - Dursley craft fair, 9.30am
  • July 16th - Hatherells yard, Chipping Sudbury 10.00am

With summer just around the corner, people are dreaming of whiling away the days by the coast. Bring the coast home with a sail boat of your own.

Clearly following a watery theme, this anchor is a beautiful large piece, measuring a whopping 29cm tall!

Working with glass top tip

I’m going to talk this month about light boxes, or light panels, ways to illuminate your glass.

Where you can see enough light coming through the glass you are working with, a light box is a brilliant investment. Now I’m not here to try and sell one to you, but mine was an Amazon purchase, and gets used daily.
My designs are originally drawn on my iPad, and then printed. From here I can place the design onto the fully lit light box, and over that the glass. I can then trace my shapes onto the glass using a sharpie pen. It cuts down significantly on waste, time and allows me to look at the glass to select the right section to use.

Light boxes are also fab for putting finished work on to see them fully lit from behind, or projects in progress to see how the light impacts on the glass I want to use.

So now I bid you farewell for the month, fingers crossed I manage a newsletter for July!

Have fun!!

So….
